Cottenham Village College, Cottenham

  • This £750K M&E project for Interserve had an emphasis on green solutions so we installed services to help facilitate ground source heat pumps and natural ventilation to communal areas through wind catchers on the roof.

  • To provide heat to the hot water, we used solar panels on the roof and saved energy by controlling all external lighting via photo cells and time clocks, extending this through to internal lighting with PIR’s.

  • We used lighting to complement the natural daylight of the main atrium and cafeteria and the entire area was installed with underfloor heating.

  • We installed sensored windows, motorised to open and close dependent on temperature, air quality or weather, as well as shading via automated blinds, which are interfaced with the window controls.

  • We provided data and power points on trunking to meet the demands of modern-day teaching.

  • And for those internal rooms and rooms without windows − that were not able to be naturally ventilated, we installed heat recovery units and local extract fans.

  • We installed underfloor heating and air conditioning in the lecture room, while leaving the paint spray booths and store areas unheated.

  • To make the most of the external workspace as the focal point of the building, we illuminated it with up-lighters and surface mounted luminaries.
