We want to create equal opportunities regardless of gender

Aysegul Sabanci is a Non-Executive Director at TClarke, bringing with her a wealth of experience and knowledge within the engineering and construction industries. As a fully qualified engineer, she believes empowering women is critical for improving diversity, fostering innovation and ultimately driving significant change that can benefit the built environment as a whole.

She explains why TClarke is going forward with its 25 by 28 programme, which aims to achieve 25% female TClarke entrants for apprenticeships and people in training by 2028.

“The gender role gap has existed in various industries for a long time, with the built environment being no exception. This gender imbalance reflects a systematic talent-management problem, which starts from attracting candidates, especially in their early years. Unfortunately, even today, the percentage of female candidates for apprenticeships and job opportunities in the built environment remains low. As an industry, we need to engage better with young women and their families to showcase the opportunities for growth and earning potential the sector offers. Moreover, we need to address the fact that female candidates often become discouraged from pursuing a career in the built environment as they progress in their studies and training. This discouragement results from a lack of support for women already in the industry and stereotypes about gender roles that persist.

At TClarke, we take proactive steps towards creating a diverse, inclusive, and equitable workplace. We set an exciting target to lead the way. The 25 by 28 programme includes offering mentorship and training programmes, introducing targeted recruitment and retention strategies, and providing support networks for women already in the industry.”
